Teaching goals教学目标

Then I get up, go downstairs and switch on the TV in the living room.  

Meetings and phone calls take up a large part of the day.  

Every minute of the day is filled with urgent matters.  

When I get home at about ten, I look at some documents that I bring back from the office so that I can be ready for the next day’s work.  

Besides, I get bored if there’s nothing to do. I like being busy.

Step I Pre-reading  

Talk about TV programmes.  

T: How many kinds of TV programmes can you name?   

Students may work out a longer list than the one given in Key Words.   

T: Can you give an example after each kind?  

Ss: For example, Shrek is a cartoon, Face To Face a talk show, My Olympic a sports programme …  

T: What are your favorite kinds of TV programme? Tell each other about it.  

Step II  Prediction  

Before start reading the passage, Ss are asked to make a prediction about the general idea of the text with the help of the title and the cartoons.  

T: Look at the title and the cartoons. What is the text probably about?  

S: Maybe it is about two different lifestyles. One is very relaxing, while the other is much stressful. Or in other words, it is about a lazy man and a busy one.  

Step II  Skimming   

Let the Ss skim the whole passage to find out the general information.   

T: Now please read the text quickly. Try to catch the main idea and tell us how the passage is developed. Right start now, and you will have two minutes.  

Two minutes later  

T: Time is up. Does anyone want to summarize what you have read?  

S: This passage includes two parts, under the subtitles --- A Couch Potato and A Workaholic. In each part, the person tells us his lifestyle by describing his daily activities.   

T: How is the passage developed?  

S: And basically, the information is given in time order.  

T: Absolutely right.  

   

Step III  Scanning   

Let the Ss read the passage again, and make a timetable of their daily life.  

T: Next, please read the passage again, and make a timetable of their daily life.  

Possible answers:

T: Excellent! It’s well done. Their lifestyles are clearly shown in the tables. Now do you have any idea about the two expressions “Couch Potato” and “Workaholic”? Try to explain their meanings in your own words.    

Ss: A Couch Potato refers to a person who spends most of his/her free time sitting or lying on a couch, watching TV or eating food.  

   A workaholic is a person who likes, loves, and is addicted to work.  

   

Step IV  Intensive Reading

☆ Tell the students do careful reading and answer some comprehending questions.  

T: Now read the texts again and finish Exercise 4 on page 8.  

Step V  Discussion   

1.Deal with Voice your opinion.  

T: You’ve read about Brain and Bob’s stories. Are their lifestyles healthy? What can they do to improve their lifestyles?  

2.Then let students do pairwork activity 6. Ask some pairs do presentation before   

the class.   

T: It seems some of you don’t have healthy lifestyle. Here I have some tips for healthy lifestyle. Read them together and keep them in mind.   

How to Have a Healthy Lifestyle  

1.      to have enough sleep;  

2.      to go to bed early and to get up early every morning;  

3.      to do regular exercises  

4.      to eat more vegetables and fruits and eat less junk food  

5.      to have a balanced diet  

6.      often smile, keep happy and forget the trouble  

7.      Remember: Modern living is such a busy way of life that we don’t always remember to make time for ourselves but it’s just as important as the hundred and one other things which make up our day.  

Step V  Homework

Finish off the exercises at p54-55
