Clean-up efforts were under way on Friday to control coal tar (焦油) pollution in a river in North China's Hebei Province, which is endangering a reservoir(水库) supporting Baoding, a city with a total population of more than 10 million.

The pollution was caused by a traffic accident in North China's Shanxi Province on Monday. A truck carrying 60 tons of coal tar overturned in Fanshi County and spilled (使流出) its entire load into the Dasha River, which originates (发源于)  in Shanxi, passes through Fuping County in Hebei and empties into the Wangkuai Reservoir 30 kilometres downstream.

Wangkuai is one of two key reservoirs that supplywater to Baoding. Fire engines were sent from Baoding 8.5 kilometres downstream to pump the polluted water from the fiver. The water will be pooled and treated in a closed environment.

Clean-up workers had built 51 dams by Thursday to intercept the 60 tons of coal tar among other measures to minimize the pollution threat downstream. The dams, 42 in Fanshi County and nine in Fuping County, were built to treat the polluted water. Clean-up workers also dug holes near the river and diverted the spill into them.

Cotton batting sponge (海绵) and straw were trucked in to absorb the coal tar in the Dasha River. Activated carbon was also put into the fiver to absorb the huge mounts of pollutants. Rescue workers began putting in place a 15-kilometre-long pipe on Thursday to carry clean water downstream in a bid to ensure that residents downstream would have access to safe drinking water.

So far there have been no reports of people falling ill from the contaminated water, largely because the area's drinking water comes from wells.

The truck was heavily overloaded when the accident happened, but the driver held back the fact that he was carrying coal tar when he reported the accident to traffic authorities, delaying clean-up efforts. The truck driver has been detained (拘留) .

60.The truck carrying 60 tons of coal tar turned over on _____.

  A. Monday        B. Tuesday           C. Wednesday      D. Friday

Companies with powerful brand names are benefiting the most from globalization. This is particularly true in the auto industry.

Car owners often see their vehicle as an extension of their personality and social status, for that reason, they care more about the brand name of a car than a household item such as a washing machine. It does not matter where a Mercedes is produced or where its components are sourced; it will always commend a higher premium than, say, a Lexus, although the latter is arguably a better car. There are people willing to pay more for a Jaguar than a Lincoln although both cars ride on the same Ford-developed platform.

Volvo has built up a reputation for safety and many consumers are willing to pay more money to buy its cars although less expensive alternatives (可能性) have proven to be just as safe. Ferraris look fast in the parking lot. You would want one if you have a few million yuan to blow just to be seen in it.

I could go on but I think I have made the point. Most of us know that China is a car crazy country. Many economists and auto analysts have predicted that China will overtake Japan within a decade to be the world's second largest car market after the United States.

But has anyone ever wondered why China does not have its own global car brand? Chery is trying hard but its brand value is still behind that of other foreign names and its smaller domestic (本国的)  competitors are not even in its rear ( 后的) view mirror in the branding race.

It is such a pity. When I first visited the Chinese mainland in the late 70s, I rode a Shanghai (the brand)  taxi and thought it was really neat. The Beijing Jeeps are as attractive, as any of those four-wheel-drive cars that young people love so much. And, who has not dreamt of riding at the back of a Red Flag limousine (轿车) with side window curtains drawn. I did.

72.Some car owners care more about the brand names partly because _____.

  A. it is safer to drive                           B. the brands represent their status

  C. it is comfortable to take                      D. the brands have more functions

73."A car crazy country" refers to a country that _____.

  A. owns many famous brands in the world        B. encourages citizens to own cars

  C. produces more cars than needed              D. has more cars

74.By mentioning Chery, the author is trying to _____.

  A. tell us Chery has no way to become global car brand

  B. analyse why China can't have global car brand

  C. show Chery is making contributions to develop its own brand

  D. wonder whether Chery has belief to succeed

75.When mentioning the Beijing Jeeps, the author _____.

  A. appreciates its functions                               B. dislikes it

  C. advises people to own one                    D. thinks highly of it

One possible version:

With the development of science and technology, people have a wider choice of sending greetings to their friends and relatives. The traditional way is to send greeting cards on festive occasions. It takes a bit longer, but the familiar handwriting itself makes a friend happy. Now, it is more popular to send flowers. Thanks to the Internet, we can send e-cards instead of paper ones. Most of the e-cards are beautifully designed and many have music and cartoons. And they can be sent and received almost the moment you click the button of “send”. Another way is to send mobile phone messages, which, in my opinion, is the most convenient and therefore my favorite way of greeting a friend.

(Text 4)

W: Where have you been all this time? The train is leaving in a minute.

M: I' m sorry, Susan. I' m late. I was in a department store looking for something.

W: Well, let' s hurry.

(Text 5)

W: Why are you moving to another city?

M: I just want to have a chance of working in a different place.

W: You could consider applying for a different position in your company.

M: It' s no good doing that. I've tried it before.

(Text 6)

W: What's wrong with you, Bob?

M: I have frequent headaches and I don' t seem to have any energy.

W: Do you sleep well?

M: No. I have trouble sleeping.

W: Do you eat well?

M: I probably don' t eat well. I eat a lot of junk food. I don’t eat enough fresh vegetables.

W: You've gained some weight since I saw you last time.

M: I think so. I’m not as physically active as I used to be. I’m at my office all day long.

W: I guess you work too hard. Let me check your blood pressure. Take off your coat and roll up your sleeve, please.

(Text 7)

M: How important are friends to you, Jean?

W: Well, to me ... friends ... people I know I can really depend on ... to me that's the most important thing in life. It's more important even than love. If you love someone, you can always fall out of love again, and that can lead to a lot of hurt feelings, bitterness, and so on. But a good friend is a friend for life.

M: And what exactly do you mean by a friend?

W: Well, I’ve already said, someone you know you can depend on. I suppose what I really mean is ... let, me see, how am I going to put this ... Oh yes, it’s someone who will help you if you need help, who'll listen to you when you talk about your problems ... some-one you can trust.

(Text 8)

W: Have you pressed the button?

M: Yes, look! The lift is coming. It’s at the fifth floor.

W: It'll never come to the seventh floor. Look, it's at the fourth floor now. It's going

down again. There must be something wrong with it. We can't wait all day. We'd better walk down the stairs.

M: Well, I’m not going to do that.

W: I’11 wait for you on the ground floor.

M: I’11 be there before you, I’m sure.

W: Let’s wait and see.

M: Sorry to have kept you waiting so long. It has stopped between the fourth and fifth floor.

   We can’t wait any longer.

(Text 9)

M: Hi, Katherine. I've been meaning to ask if you’d like to see a movie sometime.

W: I'd love to, Michael.

M: Well, there's a great new comedy playing tonight at the Odeon. It's supposed to be really funny.

W: Oh, sorry. I don't really like comedies very much.

M: Oh. Well, the only other thing showing is a horror movie.

W: Oh no, I just can’t watch horror movies. They give me nightmares.

M: Hmm ... Well, there’s a rock concert in the park tonight. Would you rather go to that?

W: Actually, I don't like rock. I like pop music.

M: Oh really? I love rock. So, what do you usually do on Saturdays?

W: Well, I love going to jazz clubs along Dawson Street. Come to think of it. Ginny Kay is playing down there tonight.

M: Great! Let’s go.

(Text 10)

M: Hello, everyone. The bus is leaving in a few minutes. So I'd just like to go over some of our safety rules before we set off. Firstly, you mustn't get out of the bus without my permission. Remember, that you're safe inside the bus. If you get out on your own, you could be attacked. Secondly, you must all stay close to me. We really have to stay together even in the special reserve areas. Now thirdly, you all have to sign in this insurance declaration, saying that you’re taking responsibility for your own safety. I’11 just pass it around for you all to sign. Finally, I want to remind you we're going to a nature reserve. All the animals are wild and they don't like being disturbed. So when we are walking, we must try to keep as quiet as possible. Now, any questions?
